    With the start of the Major League Baseball World Series in San Francisco this week, I felt it appropriate to share a story of career success in baseball. In baseball, as in any other job, success comes to those who work hard and take advantage of the opportunities in front of them.     Recently I was invited to speak at a conference of community college leaders on the west coast who have an interest in expanding the discussion of increasing the success rate for students of color. I was honored to be invited and look forward to active involvement in the dialogue. As I read as much as I can about community colleges, their origin, and what challenges they’re facing, it has been quite an eye opener in terms of the important role that community colleges play in our lives and opportunity to help make a difference for our country. There seems to be a parallel to the challenges employers face providing development and advancement opportunities for a broader and more diverse pool of employees.

  4. Keeping Employees Motivated: The Security Orientation October 5, 2010

    Several months ago, I stepped into the cube of a friend whom I’ll call Jack at a large US-based high-tech company. Jack started with this company as a security guard while attending college. Upon graduation, he joined the Finance organization where he held several positions, eventually working his way both up and across the company in several functions. Jack recently led a significant change effort at the company, impacting tens of thousands of employees worldwide.
