This is such an important issue and I too am grateful for Jane's perspective. Cultural Differences are a gift that should provide opportunities for 'connection' vs. misunderstandings but it starts with having the dialogue.

Thank you, Jane, for giving us insight into your experiences—both personal and professional, and for showing us how one influences the other. My understanding of some of the challenges regarding career progression for Asian Americans is deeply enriched from your having shared your world with us. I found it especially important, and powerful, the way in which you introduced cultural mores as not being better or worse than different ones. For example, that Asian children (and then adults) don’t generally sing their own praises because that’s the role of their parents. But the fact is, making our accomplishments known to others is important in both cultures! I also appreciate your suggestion that the first part of taking ownership of our professional growth is recognizing that WE CAN take ownership. This recognition, and the strategies you present for success, are key for everyone. Thank you for opening this important window with warmth and wisdom.

Thank you Mike Hyter for saying in this blog what a number of people have felt at times as they may also have been challenged by personal courage along with the circumstance of feeling isolated. Your message reverberates well with a great deal of clarity during these economic times.
